The organisation performs all heart and lung surgeries for the West of Scotland and provides planned care services nationally. Major specialties include cardiac, thoracic, orthopaedic, ophthalmology, general surgery, and diagnostics. Services are designed to reduce waiting times nationally, supporting other boards through referral pathways. There is special emphasis on cardiac and thoracic care, orthopaedics, and diagnostic imaging, making NHS Golden Jubilee a hub for high-volume, high-complexity procedures.

Activity levels for 2024/25 were are follows:

  • 119,848 inpatient, day case, and diagnostic procedures completed.
  • 449 Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedures (interventional cardiology).
  • 6,223 orthopaedic surgeries.
  • 11,889 cataract procedures.
  • 8,842 endoscopy procedures.
  • 29 heart transplants.

Specialist technologies include advanced surgical robotics, leadless pacemaker implantation, and TAVI. Accredited by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACI) for heart imaging, facilities include 4 MRI scanners; 3 CT scanners and 3 ultrasound rooms. The high-volume diagnostic imaging centre performs 30,000+ procedures annually.

The Golden Jubilee Research Institute (GJRI) is part of the NHS Golden Jubilee campus in Clydebank. The Research Institute works collaboration with academia, industry, and NHS partners to deliver high-quality, patient-centred research.

Core Functions:

  • Research Governance Team: Responsible for project review, approval, and quality assurance.
  • Research Delivery Teams: Manage the operational delivery of approved research projects.
  • Clinical Research Facility (CRF): Includes consulting rooms, and a laboratory.

Research Portfolio:

  • 120 active projects across multiple clinical specialties.
  • Mix of commercially sponsored, academic, and NHS-led studies.

  • Includes Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs), device studies, and observational research

As of November 2025, there are two actively recruiting gene therapy trials – one academic and the other commercial. A second commercially sponsored and funded project is currently in the set-up phase which will bring the total number to three. All are in the cardiovascular research project portfolio. The NHS Golden Jubilee is registered as Genetically Modified (GM) Centre 3196.
