Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CAVUHB) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan, in the south-east of Wales. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is one of the largest NHS organisations in Europe. They employ approximately 17,000 staff and provide health and wellbeing services to a population of around 472,400 people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. We also serve a wider population across South and Mid Wales for a range of specialities. 

Research and Development is embedded across the Health Board, and we are a leading centre for clinical trials and other studies in Wales. The R&D office supports the development of high-quality research within the Health Board and ensures it is conducted and managed to a high scientific and ethical standard.

In collaboration with Cardiff University and Swansea University we offer Advanced Therapies Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) development and manufacturing services in specialist Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) licensed facilities.

We work in collaboration with Velindre NHS Trust for the delivery of Oncology trials.

CAVUHB is supported by Advanced Therapies Wales to Cultivate Advanced Therapies research capacity and capability, an example of this research capability is, the Advanced NeuroTherapies Centre (ANTC) in Cardiff which is the only UK site and one of only 5 worldwide delivering gene therapies to the human brain in First in Human and early phase clinical trials in neurodegenerative diseases.

Together with Cardiff University and Velindre University NHS Trust, the Cardiff Cancer Research Partnership collaborates on research from early discovery phase to late phase clinical trials in the Advanced Therapies sector. 

Cardiff Health Partners (CHP) is a new strategic partnership between Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff University, and Velindre University NHS Trust with the aim to make Cardiff a recognised leader in health innovation and discovery, especially in the areas of brain therapies, next-generation cancer Care (scaling up clinical trials and research through the Cardiff Cancer Research Partnership) and Precision Medicine.

We have experience in delivering both cell and gene therapy clinical trials and have the ability to carry out class 1 & 2 gene therapy studies.

Facilities include, apheresis unit, on-site stem cell processing Unit, approved centre for provision of licensed chimeric antigen receptor- T (CAR-T) cell products, and clinical research facility (CRF).

We are certified by JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee of ISCT & EBMT).

We deliver both cell and gene therapy clinical trials and have experience of delivering studies in a variety of disease areas including, Cancer (Haematology and Solid Tumours), Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Dementia, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease), Cardiovascular disease, and Radiation induced Xerostomia.
